AN EXCUSE FROM PARENTS IS NEEDED WHEN A STUDENT IS ABSENT.

May 18th

During the upcoming week in math, we will continue to focus on finding the percent of a number and also finding the total cost after a discount has been subtracted or a sales tax has been added. Students will find the percent of a number using mental math, paper pencil and/or a calculator. In science, the students will conduct an oxidation lab. The students will predict and then determine during the course of the week, what affects the rate of rusting on a piece of steel wool.

May 11th

In Science this week, students conducted an Acids and Bases Lab to determine if a solution was an acid or a base. Using an indicator pH strip, the students tested the pH in the substances to determine the rank on the pH scale. We will continue to explore matter and change as the students conduct additional labs during the next two weeks. Our focus in Math this coming week will be finding the percent of a number and finding the sale price of an item after the percentage discount. Students in Room 210 will attend the Book Fair on Tuesday, May 14th at 2:40pm.
We are getting close to the end!  Next week, our students will finish the novel, Good Night, Maman.  The students have learned a great deal about the Holocaust.  We will begin a culminating activity project next week for the book.  As a follow-up to the DARE classes, students will be writing DARE essays.  We are working in the textbook and studying Western Africa.  We will be completing our Africa in a Drum project.

May 1st

Students are to be commended on the outstanding work they did on their element projects. The models were very well done and the presentations were very informative. We will continue to explore atomic structure with some additional experiments in the matter and change unit.
We are nearly at the end of April.  There is a lot we need to do before the school year ends.  We have finished Part 1 of the novel, Good Night, Maman.  We should finish the book in the next two weeks.  In Social Studies we are learning about the African cultures.  Directions for a final project will go out next week.  DARE will be wrapping up with an essay written by the students that will qualify them to attend the DARE graduation at the Icoplex.

April 4th

This week in math, we explored integers, their opposites and the concept of absolute value. During the upcoming week, we will focus on addition and subtraction of integers, including modeling the process on a number line, which seems to help students visualize the concept.

In science we will continue to focus on elements, atoms, and the Periodic Table of the Elements. This week students will begin to prepare for a project in which they are assigned the task of creating an atom of an element and then designing a flyer to highlight interesting facts and uses of their element.

Enjoy Spring Break!
The third nine weeks has ended! Report cards go home on April 4th. This week we developed the historical background for our novel "Good Night, Maman". On Monday we will begin reading the book. Writing class has centered around writing a persuasive essay. The drafts of the essay"Is It OK to Lie?" should be finished before spring break. Social Studies "Diverse Africa" should wrap up next week, too.
